If you're the proud pet parent of a new cat, the question that's probably uppermost in your mind is how to house-train a kitten. You will be relieved to know that litter box training is usually a simple matter and that many kittens arrive at their new homes having learned how to use the litter box from their mothers. Even those who haven't are helped by a strong instinct to bury the evidence after they've done the deed.

The supplies you will need.

To get your kitten started on the path to developing good bathroom habits, you'll need the following items.

1. Litter Boxes: It is a good idea to have an extra litter box on hand. Place them in areas that are easy to reach while offering privacy. If they are too exposed, your kitten may not feel secure enough to use them.

2. Cat Litter: While there are a lot of options out there, it's best to start with a quality, unscented litter. While most cats don't mind their litter, some may dislike the texture and smell. Stop experimenting when your kitten is fully litter-trained.

3. Treats and toys: When you see your adorable furry bundle of joy using their box, give them a treat or a piece of dry cat food. You can also use toys and praise to help create a positive association with litter box use.

Method

Step 1: As soon as your cat arrives in the box, show them by sitting in the box and letting them sniff and examine it. To avoid confusing your cat, do not move the boxes.

Step 2: Put your cat in one of the boxes immediately after eating and after waking up. If you notice your kitten acting like it needs to go, sniffing or cowering in a certain area, pick it up and put it in their litter box.

Step 3: Reward your kitten whenever you see them using it. Give them lots of praise, a treat, or a toy to reinforce it.

Step 4: Do not punish or scold your kittens for accidents. Doing so will only lead to stress and anxiety, which can make training harder. Your kitten won't associate the punishment with the event in question, so scolding them won't do any good.
